Nothing But Net
When Marcus Mason walked into the Parker Field House nearly two decades ago, he came with a vision of making an impact on young kids. A former Division I basketball coach with a master's degree in sports management, Mason had spent 6 years coaching at the college level. "I figured that I could have more of an impact on our youth by actually being in the community and teaching the things that I learned as a college coach." That decision gave birth to Nothing But Net (NBN) Coaching, an elite youth basketball development program that has since become one of Parker's most beloved sports institutions.
From the start, Mason recognized that lasting success would require genuine community roots. When he first arrived at the Parker Field House, the facility's basketball program was just getting off the ground. Mason saw an opportunity not just to set up shop, but to truly partner with the town. He got involved in Saturday rec basketball games, began coaching clinics, and welcomed those same kids into his camps. By the end of year two, he knew Parker was home. What began with roughly 40 kids at a single camp has since grown into a full-service program reaching approximately 1,500 young athletes per year, with 15 camps annually, classes at the Parker Recreation Center, and private training for players at every skill level.
At NBN, fundamentals are important, including dribbling, passing, shooting, offensive moves, defense, and conditioning. But Mason's philosophy extends beyond these skills. Starting with players as young as age six, he emphasizes that the earliest lessons are about more than basketball. Throughout their experience, kids are learning to be coachable, be good teammates, and communicate effectively.
The results speak for themselves. Over 18 years, NBN has helped more than 185 players go on to play college basketball and produced over 40 professionals, including Derrick White of the Boston Celtics. For Mason, itβs about more than creating professional athletes, "Watching kids grow up, that is without a doubt the most fulfilling thing in my life. Watching a kid who can't shoot a right-handed layup in the first grade, and all of a sudden he can make it in the third grade β that is without a doubt the most fulfilling thing in my life."
